Letter to Governor Edwards of Louisiana

January 19, 2016

Dear Governor John Bel Edwards,

Reversing Louisiana’s coastal land loss crisis is a high priority for our state. Every hour, an area of land the size of a football field vanishes from the coast of Louisiana. We have already lost an area of land the size of the state of Delaware. We must protect the rest and restore it for all who live along, work on or enjoy the coast.

Local anglers rely on robust coastal wetlands to provide habitat to support the next generation of redfish, trout, and bass. Louisiana’s hunters – even hunters across North America – depend on Louisiana’s healthy marsh to winter the 10 million ducks that migrate into or through the state every fall. Restoring this great natural resource is critical to sportsmen and outdoor recreation interests throughout Louisiana. It generates revenue for the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, fishing and hunting guides, marinas, hotels, lodges, gas stations, grocery stores, tackle shops, restaurants, boat dealerships, and outdoor magazines, websites and blogs.

Successive governors and legislators have made steady progress toward building a bipartisan commitment to protecting and restoring our coastal communities, economy and wildlife. Governor Jindal and his administration maintained and built on that platform, and we consider the 2012 Coastal Master Plan a crucial turning point in our long-term fight.

We urge you to continue this momentum and make a firm commitment to embrace the 2012 Coastal Master Plan and ensure that fines from the 2010 Gulf oil spill disaster are spent on a range of effective, science-based restoration solutions. We need a combination of different projects that will work in tandem to build and sustain land, including sediment diversions, marsh creation, barrier island and headland reconstruction, ridge restoration, shoreline protection and hydrological restoration.

We also ask you to engage quickly in the planning process for the 2017 Coastal Master Plan and take the lead in establishing predictable, dedicated funding streams to fully finance coastal restoration. Several significant projects currently in the planning and engineering stages could be built during your administration leaving a legacy of optimism and security about Louisiana’s coast.

Vanishing Paradise and our partners stand ready to support your administration’s efforts to secure a future for coastal Louisiana. We will work with you to ensure healthy habitat and a strong ecological and economic future for the people who live and recreate on our coast. We must save this special place for future generations to enjoy. If we do nothing, we will lose our Sportsman’s Paradise.

Please commit to our state that science-based coastal restoration and a continuation of the Master Plan process is a priority for you as our next governor – and please make sure that real restoration moves forward now that you are elected.
